How far a number is from zero, always positive or zero.
acute angleacute angle
An angle smaller than 90°.
areaarea
The amount of space inside a flat shape.
averageaverage
The sum of values divided by how many values (also called the mean).

bar chartbar chart
A chart that uses bars of different heights to compare values.

coefficientcoefficient
The number multiplied by a variable, like the 3 in 3x.
common denominatorcommon denominator
A shared denominator of two or more fractions.
composite numbercomposite number
A whole number with more than two factors, like 12.
circumferencecircumference
The distance around a circle: C = 2πr.

decimaldecimal
A number with a decimal point, like 3.14.
denominatordenominator
The bottom number of a fraction — how many equal parts the whole has.
diameterdiameter
A straight line across a circle through the center: d = 2r.
dividenddividend
The number being divided, the a in a ÷ b.
divisordivisor
The number you divide by, the b in a ÷ b.

A math sentence with an equals sign, true for certain values.
equivalent fractionsequivalent fractions
Different fractions that name the same amount, like 1/2 and 2/4.
estimateestimate
A sensible guess close to the exact answer.
even numbereven number
A whole number divisible by 2.
exponentexponent
How many times a base is multiplied by itself, the 3 in 2³.

factorfactor
A whole number that divides another exactly, 3 is a factor of 12.
fractionfraction
A part of a whole, written as numerator over denominator.

gradient (slope)gradient (slope)
How steep a line is: rise over run, m = Δy/Δx.

H

hypotenusehypotenuse
The longest side of a right triangle, opposite the right angle.

inequalityinequality
A comparison using <, >, ≤ or ≥ instead of equals.
integerinteger
Whole numbers and their negatives: …, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, …
interestinterest
Money paid for using money — simple or compound.

meanmean
Sum of the data divided by the number of data points.
medianmedian
The middle value when data is sorted in order.
modemode
The value that appears most often in a data set.

negative numbernegative number
A number less than zero, written with a minus sign.
numeratornumerator
The top number of a fraction — how many parts we have.

O

obtuse angleobtuse angle
An angle between 90° and 180°.
odd numberodd number
A whole number not divisible by 2.

parallel linesparallel lines
Lines in the same plane that never meet.
perimeterperimeter
The distance all the way around a shape.
pi (π)pi (π)
Circumference ÷ diameter of any circle, about 3.14159.
polygonpolygon
A closed flat shape with straight sides, like a hexagon.
prime numberprime number
A whole number greater than 1 with exactly two factors: 1 and itself.
probabilityprobability
The chance an event happens, between 0 and 1.
productproduct
The result of multiplying numbers.
proportionproportion
An equation saying two ratios are equal, like 1/2 = 3/6.

The result of division.

The distance from the center of a circle to its edge.
ratioratio
A comparison of two quantities by division, like 3:2.
right angleright angle
An angle of exactly 90°.

square rootsquare root
A number that multiplied by itself gives the original, √9 = 3.
statisticsstatistics
The math of collecting, organizing and interpreting data.
sumsum
The result of adding numbers.
symmetrysymmetry
A shape matches itself after a flip or turn.

A letter standing for an unknown or changeable number, like x.
volumevolume
The amount of space inside a 3D object.
